Dr. Anastasia Stamou is an assistant professor of sociolinguistics and discourse analysis at the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Western Macedonia (Greece). She holds a BA in French Linguistics and Literature from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1998), an MA in Language in Society from the University of East Anglia, UK (2000), and a PhD in the critical discourse analysis of environmental texts from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2004). Her research interests focus on the role of language in the representation of social reality, on issues of language and ideology, on the raising of students’ and educators’ awareness of linguistic variation and otherness, on critical language awareness, and on methods of textual analysis. Her current research focuses in particular on the sociolinguistics of the media and popular culture (mediation of linguistic variation and implications for critical literacy). She has published numerous papers in international (e.g. Discourse & Society, Critical Discourse Studies, Language & Communication, Language Awareness, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Journal of Youth Studies, Sociologia Ruralis, Science Education, Science Communication, Journal of Applied Social Psychology) and Greek peer-reviewed journals, articles in edited books in Greek, and papers in Greek and international conference proceedings. She has translated into Greek the book of S. Clayman and J. Heritage "The News Interview". She has been serving as reviewer of articles submitted to Applied Linguistics, Research in Science Education and Journal of Environmental Management.
